What Constitutes Domestic Violence on Cape Cod?

Domestic violence is a broad term referencing any criminal act committed against another member of your household, family, or person in which you have or had a domestic situation. Any of the following actions can result in a domestic violence charge: 

  • attempting to cause or causing physical harm;
  • placing another in fear of imminent serious physical harm;
  • causing another to engage involuntarily in sexual relations by force, threat or duress

In Massachusetts, domestic violence occurs in connection with the following types of personal relationships: 

  • A current or former spouse 
  • A current or former fiancé
  • A current or former live-in romantic partner (a “cohabitant”),
